Critical Design Reading Response

Design as Critique

Critical Design “uses speculative design to challenge preconceptions about everyday designs”, opposing affirmative designs, which reinforce the status quo.
It’s relation to activism, satire, and cautionary tales were it’s most interesting aspects, in my opinion. I feel like critical design does better in creating subversions of designs or calling attention to a design’s dumb or ridiculous qualities; I dislike the idea of actual sculptures, art objects, or artifacts being created just to subvert and actual object or design. This seems like a wasteful and possibly redundant creation.

I disagreed with the respondent’s radical view that “we expect art to be shocking and extreme”.
