Response: Roland Barthes Excerpt – The Fashion System

This excerpt reflection deals with the written description of fashion vs the visual representation of fashion and the powers of each.

A specific idea I found interesting from the Barthes excerpt was that not only are visual presentation and written presentation about a fashion garment extremely different, they relate with each other very differently. Barthes explains that all the elements within a visual representation relate to each other spatially while the elements of a written description relate to each other logically or in a syntactic way. It is obvious that the visual and written world are incredibly different, but to dive deeper and think about how all the moving cogs within each world relate to each other in extremely different ways and work together in a different sort of rhythm is really intriguing to me. Each world has different qualities, as well as different ways that a person experiences and absorbs these descriptions and this may be because of the way each world flows together. Relation of elements within each description may be key to understanding the differences between descriptions of a garment.
