This group project was meant to explore the Highline as a point of confluence, for different planes of reality, that people who came there for diverse purposes existed in. And how the space accommodated for all of them. First a layer of tourists, people who come to the Highline to take pictures of themselves to upload on social media, but completely miss the point, the students like a who observe the place, one step removed from society and intent on documentation, and people who come there to relax alone or with friends and family, and people who are just passing through.
We also meant to explore the different layers that a place can be perceived in, first in terms of its physical characteristics and elements as a space, then in terms of thoughts, observations and recording of data about the place in the minds of the people who observe it, and then in terms of the activities that take place there, as people interact with each other and the physical possibilities and limitations that the space provides.
We created an experience using 3 layers of media, the first consisted of textures and experiential elements represented through colours and textures on a transparent sheet, the second layer included our motes sketches and observations collaged onto a transparent sheet. The thirds layer included a video of silhouettes from the Highline run over a static photograph of a scene from the Highline. People were then asked to walk through these layers, while the sounds of wind, and the artificial stream were played in the background. The shadows of the people walking through the installation on the last layer, made them a part of the video, and was the crucial element in transporting the audience tot he Highline, and surrounding them in its sensations.
