White Power, 2014

Jeffrey Gibson

10 details/Initial impressions:

The piece has a white chevron pattern with huge gaps and imperfections, it isn’t actually following the pattern.

“White Power” written under the punching bags label in a slightly different color bead but still in the white, pink tone.

The choice of leaving “Everlast made in the U.S.A”

The use of a punching bag is symbolic with the theme of questioning violence and the symbol of power.

The actual sculpture is so heavy it takes a chain to hold it up.

The piece is entirely shades of white and pink.

There is the slight accent of blue in the punching bags logo and then painted on to the sides and covered with more white.

Although the actual piece is a punching bag which represents power it is reminiscent of a chandelier which could symbolize wealth and power.

The piece is completely covered in glass and plastic beads, brass and steal studs and yarn.

The piece is very large and heavy. It would be very difficult to take down.
