Typography Project 1

The Task: To create an interesting image out of a 4 x 4 grid with each box containing the same letter that can be placed, turned or moved in any direction.

SarahHennessy_Type_Project1_01This piece was my least favorite out of the 16 typographic pieces made. The movements of the letters seem unmotivated and unrelated. I also dislike the thorns and pieces of the S that seem to appear distractingly and accidentally. This piece was the first created of 16 so it definitely proves a learning curve.

I chose this piece as my favorite of the 16 Typographic creations. This piece was motivated by the idea of competition. It is as if the A’s are flying towards the center to create the one most powerful A but only 4 could make it past an invisible box. The 4 center A’s still do not make one normal A, this is an intentional choice. The resulting piece provides emotion, the idea of competition and yet still no success is a stressful notion. Combined with the cluster of A’s filling the outside of the frame the viewer is left with a sense of urgency.
