Project 3- Sound Write Up

Fear

Trying to evoke fear through sound is a very challenging task. When done incorrectly the sound can become a very comic sounding type of ghosts and ghouls. Fear is evoked by anxiety, dread, fear and panic. Also the idea that tried to build on the most, anticipation.

For my sound I layered multiple sounds of running water, cars, sirens, people talking and feet moving. The sounds varying in volume and growing as the sound gets closer to the climax. The sound of a harmonic played its highest pitch and then cracking up the decibels leads into a sound that some classmates described as a tornado, or scream. This sound was actually created by recording the sirens from an ambulance and then speeding it up 200%, putting it in reverse and then turning it up 10 decibels. This sound is placed to create the shock and very surprising and startling effect that creates fear.

The ideas of Chion are used in this video through a combination of casual listening and reduced listening. In the beginning of the video there is a lot of use of casual listening as the listener can tell they are hearing normal sounds from the street. As the video builds it becomes much closer to reduced listening as the sounds becoming distorted and you do not know what the source is.
