The 12 observed physical traces:
By Products of Use
Erosions: The bottom of classroom doors had kick marks.
Leftovers: After a class left a room there was coffee in the trash cans and hand outs with Latin phrases on them.
Missing Traces: Just outside of the elevators and stairs for the floor there is a line of computers open for use to the users of a building. There are no chairs for this activity though. Which brings to question there intended purpose.
Adaptations for Use
Props: I noticed that there was chalk placed by the chalkboards in most of the classrooms. The big lecture classroom had hidden chargers at each desk suggesting that students were encouraged to use laptops.
Separations: The obvious one is the use of walls. I also noticed a lot of columns were placed around the floor. In the big lecture classroom it felt disruptive and it blocked the view of the front for some seats.
Connections: Windows are next to and on all of the doors and many people seem to be looking inside a class as they go by or outside while they sit in.
Displays of Self
Personalization: In the conference room adjacent to the Dean’s office there are stylized posters and black and white photographs covering the room.
Identification: There was a small poster in one of the classrooms only the size of a 11×7 page with a latin phrase on it.
Group Membership: On the lockers of the 10th floor they are all marked ” for the use of NSSR students only”
Public Messages
Official: Indications of Dean’s office.
Unofficial: Many posters hanging up on the bulletin boards, suggesting classes to take or other offers from students.
Illegitimate: Drawings on desks left from students.
