My chosen art piece is the mosaic “From Earth to Sky” by Cadence Giersbach. When visiting this piece in the middle of the Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues subway station it was very immediately sticking. Covering a large part of a tall ceiling in the station. Although it was a bit difficult for me to find because the station was very large, even though there were very very few subway trains that arrived there it was all very spaced out.
After leaving the subway station my first impression of Bushwick was the amount of trash. There was a large amount of litter covering spaces of open yard and the sidewalk. The walls were covered in graffiti in most parts of the area, although these pieces felt very artistic and deep in meaning.
The windows of the homes were barred over and the only I noticed that wasn’t had several very large signs stating that they had security cameras. Besides this amount of safety the area felt like everyone knew each other, or at least comfortable enough to act that way. Walking behind a group of teenage boys that had probably just gotten out of school I noticed one lean over a fence they were passing by and through away his apple remains into their trash. Further on the sense of community I noticed there were many places that required memberships or to be a part of a group or club. Such as passing schools, gyms, a fire department and a basketball court where people played in separate groups.
Many of the stores here were very strange trinket type stores. The type with .99¢ dolls that look like they would come alive and kill you in your sleep.
