Ethnography at Citi Field

For my system I plan to study the effect that large sports stadiums have on the neighborhood that they are placed in. Specifically in New York I am choosing to focus on Willet’s Point in Queens and the effect that the Citi Field Stadium has had on the area. Citi Field, also known as Mets Stadium is a relatively new implication only opening in 2009 but it was placed in the same location as its predecessor Shea Stadium. The Mets Stadium has lots of archival material based on the baseball team and their history in the location which I will be interested to look into however I will more then likely also have to look into the archival info from newspapers about the surrounding area.

It would be easiest to assume the role of spectator in order to the view the effect that game day has on the area. Attending a game and observing the way that the attendees are treating the surrounding area and how the mood of the neighborhood changes before and after a game. To view the way the area is on a day to day is much more difficult as it would not be easy to see the way that the area looks without effecting the way that people act.
