Dérive X Memoir

Three weeks ago, I was assigned my first project at university; it was a project about a dérive – which is a theory created by Guy Derive. Dérive is “a mode of experimental behavior linked to the conditions of urban society: a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances.”

I think walking and people’s movement fits in very well with the term ” Dérive.” Walking is something unplanned that you don’t reflect on if your name is not Kate Moss and you are not a runway model. The way we walk differs for every single person, and even though a lot of people do not notice it, it struck my attention, something ordinary became unordinary.

My first draft was pictures on the street of people. I particularly like the pictures of the two young guys; I think these pictures are very raw and represent the Parisians vintage vibes very well.

I also did some videos and edited them, I wanted to capture the everyday life with time and date shown.

Final Dérive- MOVEMENT

For my Final project, I decided to put my draft together. I wanted to combine my photographs with the videos I made. This is where I got the Idea to do a flip book. I took photos of Astrid walking and made it into a flip book.

FLIPBOOK:

FINAL DÉRIVE PROJECT

“In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all life presents as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation.”- Guy Debord

Reflections:

It was hard for me at the beginning to understand the project: What was I supposed to create? What is even a Dérive? I googled and googled, but nothing gave me a good definition. However, when I went out on the streets to find my Dérive, some pieces of the puzzle became clear. I wanted to focus on movement, people walking in everyday situations. I snapped some photos and started editing them; I enjoyed the modern looks that meet the classic Parisian vintage vibes. I brought my material with me to class and received a lot of positive feedback and critique. When trying to explain what I wanted to achieve with my project to one of my classmates, I came up with the idea to do a flip book which he liked. I am very pleased with the turnout of my project. What I like the most about my project is the process of doing a flip book, how all my work and material I did for my Dérive is indicated in my complete work. If I were to do it again – I would have done a cover, chosen a more professional paper, maybe stiffer paper and thought more about the presentation of the flip book.
