Let’s really think for a second, about what Andrea Fraser is doing in gallery talks. Is this anger at an institution? Or is it just a questioning? I think that nowadays we can take this kind of satirical view of art or a satirical presentation of art for granted. Roll our eyes at it… I’ve made jokes like this before. Asking if a trash bag on the floor of a museum is art. Ha ha ha.  But I think we are only able to this idea for granted because of Andrea Fraser, who was the first person to criticize the presentation of art and the institution of the gallery / museum like she did. These videos are related to the institution of a museum. The first, a film about how machines and math of the west helped advance civilization as we know it. The second speaks to the colonialism found in numerous museums, and the third shows the institution of the Met in the mid to late 40s. I think that Fraser’s work played with the power of the institution and subverting that power (through satire as well as sex in her other work.)
