“For far too long we designers have thought that we can produce freedom by creating cleverly designed products. It is time for us to shift focus from the design of commodities to the design of capabilities in order to get a serious discussion going on what we really can be or do in the world.” I strongly agree with the author’ opinion that rather than designing for the next cool trending electronic gadget, one should focus on designing a gadget that is both a well produced commodity for consumers and an open source gadget for people seeking for more freedom. The mini computer, Raspberry pi, fully backs up this design theory. It offers the ability for people to browse the internet at a low price and it also gives home brew makers the ability to construct various electronic gadgets. The practice of designing for capabilities should become the fundamental principal as the society enters the Anthropocene.
