Inspired by Rei Kawakubo 2015 Fall/Winter RTW Victorian mourning dresses, my purpose of making this garment is to show the beauty of torn clothes and to discuss the possibility of clothes choices depending on different occasions no matter how moral standards judge. Vibrant and light colors (pink and silver) are utilized to create the gorgeous ambiance for a wedding – this is a dress exclusively for bride’s mate which is an important role in any wedding, the dress code is limited though, which is beyond audience but under the brides.
“I don’t have a definition of beauty, I’m always inspired by the people around me.” The research about Kawakubo does help me to understand the concept and further thinking behing the garments and shows she has done before. They are not only garments or art pieces, but media that transfer a great amount of information, such as love and nostalgia.
I ripped a silk fabric apart in its edges and open the side of inner dress in order to show the wild personalities of an unmarried lady who is invited to be a bride’s mate.
Overall, I challenged myself making a structural outer part skirt using stiff fabrics and wire, also creating the harmonious feeling brought by the color matches.
