Bridge 3 Artist Statement

I painted my cabinet black on the outside and red on the inside to show the frustration that occurs in the community when it comes to gentrification. I’ve inserted small artifacts for each of the sources. The flowers can be seen from the outside this is representative of the article talking about both the positives and negatives that can be seen with gentrification. The small indigenous women represents the Mexicans that reach out to Mexico for resources to fight against gentrification. The flags are the different nationalities that have “taken” over the area through time. The small clock is the time that passes and is supposed to show personal experiences of how people have seen the neighborhood change with time. The dollar bill is a case study done on the resources that are given to the neighborhood and how successful and unsuccessful they have been. The Urban Renewal Act doesn’t only affect Spanish Harlem it also affects other communities and its important to have in this cabinet of curiosities.

Lenika Silva, or rather Leni, is a native New Yorker attending Parsons School of Design. As of right now she is undeclared but excited to see what her first year as a student at The New School will steer her towards. She original had set her heart on film but decided that she would like to learn about other forms of media and art that were never available for her at her high school. Some interesting facts about Leni: Leni is scared of pigeons even though she is a Native New Yorker. She lives in Spanish Harlem (they trying to change the name to SoHa (South Harlem) and it pains her soul. She is Mexican so she loves spicy food and can speak Spanish.
