Product Redesign

The daily object that I decided to redesign is my vanity mirror. On the right I included the swatches of the 3 materials fro the Material ConneXion collection museum. The mirror would be substituted with Alpolic Mitsubishi Plastics Composites, a metal that is highly reflective and is intended as an alternative for glass. The metal is also lightweight and makes it easy for traveling. I often drop my mirror accidentally so another property of this metal is that it is not easy to shatter. The next sustainable material that I decided to use for the frame of the mirror was Rainbow Colors aluminum, it is made to imitate the color and surface finsih of metal, the material is weatherproof, and since I do drop my mirror often it is scratch and corrosion resistant. You can get the metal in many different finishes such as brushed, glossy, polished, or matte. Lastly, I decided to use Anvil wood droplets/ Swarovoski, it is a rigid wood panel embedded with Swarovoski crystals. This material would be used as the embellishment piece for my mirror.

Here is the design narrative of which materials and ecodesign strategies I am incorporating into my redesign product and system.

  1. Innovation: I couldn’t connect one of the components for this object.
  2. Reduced Material Impacts: This new object of materials would use less quantity of materials and can also avoid materials that are harmful to our health.
  3. Manufacturing Innovation: This new way of manufacturing vanity mirrors will minimize the number of production steps to obtain certain parts of materials, as well as the manufacturing waste.
  4. Reduced Distribution Impacts: This is really beneficial because the product is now lightweight so it is easy to carry and store during the shipping process, there probably won’t have to be a lot of packaging materials used to protect it, and it can be easy to source the materials in local areas.
  5. Reduced behavior and use impacts: You are saving more money because if it does fall it won’t shatter.
  6. System Longevity: The crystals are a nice embellishment piece that will draw customers
  7. Transitional systems:I couldn’t connect one of the components for this object.
  8. Optimized End-of-Life:The materials used during the process are not harmful.
