1. I began by using an alfa knife creating jagged lines throughout the styrofoam. The ‘cracks’ varied in length, depth and curvature.
2. Using two droppers; one with acetone and one for two shades of heavily diluted acrylic paint (a mix of turquoise and mix of ultramarine) and proceeded to colour in the cracks, sparingly, and effectively creating a chemical reaction to break the foam down.
3. I then began to experiment on acrylic plastic with a range of heavily diluted acrylic paints. Using eye droppers for each shade, i worked in and out between water and paint, adding whites and lighter tones to create a marbled, rippled effect.
4. While the paint was setting, i went back to the styrofoam piece and proceeded to spray paint white throughout the board. Carefully and precisely, i went over the areas with with different proximities, creating a large range of opacity in the paint. The chemical reactions from the spray paint were evident in the areas of close proximity and heavy spraying, while others are more subtle.
