Space and Materiality, Face Dove

For my Space and Materiality drawing I choose to take a pencil. It was green yet the emblems on the object were gold and shiny. As we had to to develop our drawings I thought about lines, about simplicity and combine it with a political statement. I choose the aspect of the golden emblems and developed it further into a 3D objects, yet to underline the feeling of a 3D drawing I decided to do a piece of jewelry made of gold wire to imitate the effect of the thin lines on the pencil.

As I developed it further, I tried to make an earring based on Picasso’s ‘face dove’, a piece of art which is not just close to my heart but also a contemporary political statement of peace and end to discrimination, violence and war. Influenced by the Tolstoi book ‘War and Peace’. The dove as a symbol of peace and compassion hugs the face as a temporary mind set. Furthermore the aspect of the piece being an earring was strengthened by the concept; the dove not just hugging the face but yet also your face as you wear the piece of Jewelry. As I tried to create the object I did different sketches, looking at different ways of line drawing and had some difficulties visualizing and taking action of choosing one of them.

First I thought about making a small earring, yet as it came to the realization of the object, I decided to make it in a larger scale to capture the details of the face and emphasize the concept of empathy and compassion. When it came to the materials I bought 1mm diameter wire as well as 0.8mm diameter wire to experiment with the effect of both, yet preferred the 0.8 diameter wire since the thicker one needed more physical strength and the thinner one conveyed the feeling of a 3D drawing more strongly. I used pliers to bend it. When it came to the stabilisation of the object, which was quite fragile, I attached the end of the wire to the beginning to enable a sense of stabilisation when wearing the earring as well as during transportation.
