A spoon is a utensil molded out of silver or another hard material like steel, wood, or stone. Consisting of a handle connected to a neck like piece, with a hollow, bowl shape, which curves down and back up to hold liquid or any semisolid object. The bowl of the spoon is usually smooth, while the handle may be decoratively shaped while still remaining functional and ideally easy to grip. All s poons are sized differently, but most commonly an object a person can hold in one hand, using the spoon’s bowl to ladle food into their mouth.
When considering the context of a spoon in the world of tool design, I imagine spoons are one of the first hand tools humans made and began using. I’m curious to see how the first spoons from early civilizations developed into the often decorative but practical items found in every household today.
