This cute deck for a tree, which is a suggestive of a man's face brings fun to people even though it is simple.

The high chroma pink of the graffiti really attracts people's attention. It brightens the street's a bit gloomy atmosphere.

This street art gives warm atmosphere to the neighborhood. Even though it is just a paint on a wall, but I felt like I could hear the sound of a man singing.

This street art is in Hoboken. When I saw this, I thought it was very humorous and cute. This kind of street art makes people to relive the stress from their jobs or school.

In front of my apartment, there is a trail and benches for residents. On weekends, people go out with their family, sit on the benches and get some rest there. In the media, people discuss that, nowadays, neighbors barely talk to each and even some discords take place between their relationships. In order to prevent those disharmonies, and induce people to have desirable relationships, I think government should provide some public spaces for the neighbors. Even if they want to get to know their neighbors, they don’t have much chance to do that. In that sense, I think New Port is a perfect residential space to do that. There are many public spaces in New Port such as an ice-skating rink, pavilions, and small parks. Even in summer, New Port provide free outside movie shows for their residents’ leisure. I think these kinds of managements improve not only their quality of life, but also the relationships between them. Actually, this is one of the big reason I love here!

I took this picture in a New Port walk way along the Hudson riverside. It was late night when I first visited New Port to go to my friend’s house. My friend strongly suggested going for a walk to see a night view of New York, so we bought coffee and went to the riverside. Then, I was really attracted to the scene in front of me. Well, I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I shed some tears too. Because, at that time, I was really exhausted and I was disappointed in my self. It was hard to deal with the things that confused me because I couldn’t adapt my self to new circumstances. I was so lonely but I didn’t want to accept the fact that I was alone in the big city. I pretended that I was happy and always put on a fake smile in front of people. During seeing the view, I recalled myself trying so hard to get my father’s permission to study here in New York, recalled how desperate I was. After that day, I gathered up my mind and settled my self to be in harmony with the place I was belonging. Also, I moved to New Port. Whenever I am in hard times, I go to the riverside walkway and think about the past days. Therefore, to me, this neighbor is a motive and always inspires me.

I took this picture at the New Port PATH station in the middle of the late night. There were only a few people who were waiting for the train to get back home. People were doing their things such as, listening to music, texting and sleeping. At that moment, I felt that, sometimes, public space could be private place. I wrote some poems to express the atmosphere I got, at that time.

Crowded space with noisy sound-

in the middle of New Port Path Station.

Only a few people waiting for train to get back home-

2AM in the Path Station.

Looking at people’s who are waiting for train.

Exhausted physically, perhaps mentally.

Warm air embraces

people’s cold body.

Only silence exists-

on the ground floor of Path Station.

Waiting for the train,

no need to rush.

The place where people start a day

with excitement.

It’s a beginning of the day’s journey.

Old man’s harmonica melody echoes drearily.

Suddenly, it becomes consolation for exhausted workers.

The train never complains –

but he is obviously exhausted.

It was hard row to hoe –

said the train at the end of the day.

A warm, cozy atmosphere –

the mildest winter.

Even at 2 AM,

it’s never too late.

Only the oppressive silence

hung between the strangers.
