Reflection to Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms

The first aphorism I chose from Christopher Breward’s aphorisms from his foreword to Fashion Studies was, “Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.” The starting point of my work is almost always what I want to tell people – whether it be a human emotion, a way of life, sadness, gladness, or a phrase from a good song. I want to re-create in my own style very precious things that people could have easily passed by oblivious. I want to converse with people through the medium that is my work. This is the beginning of the inspiration. Therefore, I really agree with this aphorism as I consider fashion as a window to communicate with people.

The second aphorism, “Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition” is also what I really agree with in the way that every person defines fashion everyday in his or her own words. Fashion is something we deal everyday. Even though some people say that they don’t care about fashion, they make a choice of what they wear everyday. I think that kind of daily routine is a process of defining what fashion is. Thus the definition of fashion varies from people to people. We are the subjects that creating fashion and fashion consists of us. Without a doer, fashion will lose its value and disappear.
