In expressing the experience of two perspectives at once, Stereo Statues investigates the idea of time. By utilizing a purpose built stereoscope, enabling the manipulation of vision, we are able to see two angles of one object occurring simultaneously. The stereoscope works by separating each eye to each image, left and right, in order for the eye to adjust itself to viewing a 3D space. Our eyes allow us to see in 3D due to each eye viewing the environment at the exact same time, separately. What we cannot do, and what is physically impossible is viewing the same object at the same time by positioning our bodies in two separate angles.
I shot 21 stone and metal statues that surround the Louvre in Paris using a purpose built stereoscope. Laser cutting plywood and assembling a box to fit two sjcams so that the shutter can be released simultaneously for both cameras. Images from each camera were paired together to make a 3D gif. These gifs were then screen recorded in a loop showing each of the 21 gifs. Supplemented with manipulated audio bytes from Alain Resnais and Chris Markers film Statues Also Die.
