Lamy L759 Tripen
This L759 tripen, released by Lamy around 2007, provide users with three choices of writing result – black color, highlight orange, pencil gray – in its single unity-designed body.
- Substantial Analysis
Silver matte-brushed finish came from stainless steel which makes cylindrical body (including the upper and lower barrel, and the top eraser cap). Such durable material is also applied to the axle mounted clip at its upper part and the lower tip part, but with a glossy finish. Beneath the cover, a mechanical system made of black plastic, work with two ink tubes of two colors and one pencil lead tube, resulting the most part of this tripen’s function. The black plastic part also was presented at two places of the barrel in the form of rings, lower one connecting the tip and lower barrel, upper one with three color strips (showing colors represents three colors of the ink) connecting upper and lower barrel. One rubber-made eraser is hid under the eraser cap.
- Content Analysis & Formal Analysis
The style of this pen has a lot of straight line elements, and no extra ornament, which gave itself a clean and elegant look. Except the lower half of the tip part, and the narrow gap beneath the eraser cap, the contour of whole barrel is almost a perfect cylinder. “Rings” at lower, middle and upper part, also are just simple circular shape. And one the middle ring, the color label showing there are just three strips presented around. And different to other general tripen, this tripen has a slim cover, as it would not be regarded as a multi color pen by those who see it for the first time.
However, the simplicity is not only showing through the appearance. Just by only rotating the upper barrel to certain degree or color label – this single action, user can achieve different purpose: showing or hiding the nib, choosing different colors – turning this pen into three different pens, not clicking different clips when using other older tripen. The three tubes inside the barrel enable users to do the normal writing (like notes taking) with the black ballpoint, to highlight or mark something important with the neon-orange ballpoint, and to sketch using the pencil one with the eraser on the top of the pen. The arrangement of these tubes are not just aim to offer different colors, but to fulfill the different writing needs.
- Sensory Engagement & Intellectual Engagement
Utility intuitive and simplified user experience are what the design of this tripen aim to achieve, which is echoed by its look. The designer of this pen uses straight simple straight line counter, or in another way – geometrical look, to express its easy way of use. The whole pen keeps the the appearance of the original material which makes this pen, without any paint or coating, this sense of rawness represents the utility and intuitive user experience.
When user gets the pen at first time, may most intuitive response would be pushing the cap since there is a gap between the eraser cap and the barrel, but it would not work. Then user will somehow find out this pen can be rotated. And it’s just one direction rotating with different degrees, the clip will be pointing at different parts of the color label ring. When it’s pointing at different color bar, perspective nib will come out, when it’s pointing between the bars, the nib will go in. Unlike traditional or low-end multi-color pen, there are different clips for different nibs. This L759 has a simplified solution.
- Emotional Response
And when user touches it, the coldness conveyed by the stainless steel addresses the functionality of this pen, it’s useful, it’s durable. It’s not something you would like to use to write a personal dairy, it’s not intimate. It’s a tool that user takes to work with, to face different working situation and changeable environments.
- Theories and Hypotheses
Since, it would be clear that people who buy and use this L759 tripen, are aim to utilize its functionality to deal with multi writing needs in one single pen. They are people who want to avoid the trouble that they have to take many pens with them, or who hate to use a pen case because they have to carry many pens with themselves. The convenience plays a big part.
