Look At Me

What did you make and why?

My project idea is making a visualizations on digital devices that will show the pictures of the endangered mammal animals in China. The images and species information will be pulled out from online database, and it’s going to be updated in the future.

This visualization acts like a personal reminder to me. As it shows endangered animals as now we’re in Anthropocene era, I’ll be reminded what is happening on the earth and how my every individual decision might influence other species living with us on the same planet.

In what ways will this object/design be useful to you over 50 years of change? How will it be resilient (used in more than one way etc. and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage)?

The information in the visualization will be updated in the future, as there might be more endangered species in China. And the content can also be altered into other subjects rather than animals, like green lifestyle choices. And it acts like a constant reminder, in a way it could remind me to do the right thing and make the right choices.

What specific event(s) of environmental change will it help you adapt to or address? 

It will raise my awareness of that there are endangered species in China and they are endangered because of human exploitation on nature. And it will keep me aware that as a human living on the earth with other animals we should make a right choices. And if other people use this, it would also help them to remember these animals that need human help.

What materials did you use, given what you have learned this semester about changing resources and material availability?   

My visualization on the digital devices involves digital devices, electricity, internet connection, and Wikipedia information. And somehow the visualization acts like paperless way of presenting information. If we show information on actual physical materials, it will cost much materials like paper and ink, transportation. But sometimes these information could be shown on digital devices, as people have already adopted these devices and used them everyday, so the visualization will work on the current materials.

How does your object offer function and aesthetics over time? How does it fulfill the Long-Life Design criteria to the best of your ability? 

The function and aesthetics will not evolve I think, not like traditional physical materials that might be waring. However, as the time goes into the future, the content will be changing according to the latest endangered animals. I think user might feel the visualization is intelligent? And regarding criteria, it functions well even after 50 years and even better as the computer will be faster and faster. And the content could also be constantly altered or customized according to my needs.

2) Is there anything else you would like feedback on from me, before class next week regarding your final project and/or presentation?

I don’t have a question right now.

As world becoming "digitalized", I am exploring the complex correlation between the digital and the physical, the virtual and the real. Through research and project, I'm answering how virtual and digital experience is perceived, and how it can be better applied, along with things like physical computing, to people's life for better working and living experience. I’ve done various forms of project: wearable technology, digital interactive graphics, data visualization, short films and UX design for company collaboration system. I have never limit the possibility of learning and taking use of new forms or new materials. Like a vintage typewriter that uses intelligent coding to type out a poem to wake you up, a short research documentary to observe how people perceive the fake but virtual information embedded in a daily life environment, a raincoat that seal itself using magnets. Actually, most of my works challenged the application of new materials and new forms, while deliver interaction with human experience in a respectful and playful way.
