Thesis:

The total impacts of large scale development are often not felt immediately but rather decades later through issues such as storm water, energy consumption and greenhouse gases. Projects such as the Chelsea Market expansion have the opportunity to lessen these impacts through development of environmentally sustainable buildings. Since the space is commercial and does not include open space, its impacts are greater than those of other similar projects. The idea is to make Chelsea Market more sustainable while holding onto its characteristic charm. This can be achieved by sustainable design. So what is sustainable design? Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable sources, minimize waste and create healthy, productive environments.

Using their sketches, to show them what the market would look like if their plans were actually used to redesign the space, I created real-life image renderings of Chelsea Market. I then printed those out and gave it to them as a souvenir from the walk. I thought this would be a good idea because then they would actually get a feel of what the redesigned market would look like. It would also prove to them that the addition of greenery and more sustainable decoration could make the place more efficient while making it look better.
