Reimagining Times Square

Reimagining Times Square

MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art was the beginning of this assignments introduction to perspective and depth. We were tasked with visiting the museum with the mindset and eye for pieces of work that create depth in interesting ways. The incredible amount of variation and unique methods used to accomplish this task was amazing. I found the Charles White exhibit to be one of my favorites. His extensive body of work was really impressive and his subtle details used at creating depth was inspiring. The other exhibit I really enjoyed and found to be quite relevant to the topic was the Toward a ConcreteUtopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948–1980. This was all about brutalist architecture and that is the theme of my time square project.

Photo Visit to Time Square

After we visited the museum we were asked to go to time square and take over 75 photos of all angles and sides. Some looking up, some head on, some random and some of people taking selfies. We then brought these photos to class and analyzed where the perspective points were.

Perspective Sketches

Next we began actually sketching using perspective. We started out with one point perspective as seen in the second image above. Then we did two point and finally three point as seen in the first photo. I have had a lot of experience drawing with points before but it was nice to get a refresher and it is always fun making interesting shapes and buildings.

Perspective Analysis

Next we uploaded pictures that we took to illustrator and traced the perspective lines with the line tool until we were able to identify all the points. We had to find a one point, two point and then a three point. As seen in order above. I think this exercise helped me with the next process which involved far more line tracing.

Final Ideas

I was pretty set on a brutalist themed Time Square at this point. My focus was to research Soviet Union architecture and structures that were created under socialist rule.

Line Drawing

My original line drawing ended up being far more simple than the final version. Once texture was added I realized I had space to add a lot more structure and detail.

Illustrator Version

This was the second to last step. Illustrator helped me to fill in the shapes and get an understanding of the color way and mood for my final. Not many of these colors made it into my final however, they all inspired and helped.
