Proposals for Moma Ps1

Hmm if Tess had to curate an exhibit for one of the most famous museums in NYC, what would she do?

After some thinking I realized I wanted to do an instillation based around my love for Pop Art and Art History.
I started my process like ever assignment, going straight to my sketchbook. After three trips to Moma Ps1, and two to the Moma I decided I 100% wanted to base my piece in the Moma Ps1. The atmosphere is bright and the layout is extremely fluent, perfect for viewing art. I also love how drastic the room sizes are. I plan on using the room sizes to my advantage when creating my exhibit.
Looking up inspiration I found these fun Photoshop photos that sparked my interest in combining modern urban pop art with Fine art pieces, Art by Dan Cretu

My sketches started out by me playing with the idea of mixing fine arts figures and social media, creating a wall of social media “feeds” of famous art figures. This huge wall mural would have profile pictures, tweets, snapchats, and posts from artists and Portraits from sculptures, paintings and drawings. Examples would be Mona Lisa, The Girl in the Pearl Earring, Andy Warhol, Milk Maid, The Kiss, the Statue of Venus…
Example:  mona lisa

Opposite of that wall is a white wall with different weight bright stripes that continue onto the back wall horizontally. In addition there would be vertical stripes that continue on to the ceiling. In the corner of both of those walls is a replica of the Statue of David. The statue is “coated” with the continuing lines from the walls. The Statue is true to size and material.
The last and final wall, the floor, is checkered baby pink and white with Hopscotch trails from each of the exits.
Pop Art mixes with Fine
After designing this idea and having fun with colors I wanted to incorporate some type of interactive element, leading to proposal number 2!
Interactions attract viewers, everyone loves to be apart of the Art. This expands the type of people that want and are eager to come see the exhibit, from just typical art “viewers” to people that go to museums or galleries “for the Insta”.  A TON of people go to museums and realize that museums aren’t for them and tend to be bored, not this time.
I started thinking about this after a conversation with my mother over the phone. My family wanted to come see me for a fun city day but didn’t know exactly what to do. As an art lover, I suggested going to a museum but my brothers have NO patients for that.
When thinking about how I wanted to incorporate some “fun” to my exhibit I wanted to transform a room, or more, into a huge coloring book. How cool would it be if the entire room was a life size and life like coloring book. As a true five year old at heart, my inner child got excited about this idea.
Expanding on the “Life like, Life size” and “Inner 5 year old” idea I thought about a life size doll house for adults. When sketching I wanted each room to have a base theme of a typical household room (kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom, attic, basement..) but with a twist.
Unlike a normal house, the rooms have a funky spin on the room’s original purpose. I started with a mock up of a kitchen, creating a diner like layout with a simplistic design. One exit of the room would be a huge “To- Go” cup with a bendy straw, as the door way.
In all the rooms each wall would be fully white with projected different black and white patterns that the viewers can “color in” and interact with the entire exhibit. The walls would be coated with dry erase paint, temporary white wallpaper, and chalk board paint. The projections would go on and off set to the specific audio so the drawings stand out more. This adds a dance element to the exhibit. As the curator I’d like the viewers to have as much fun as I did creating this idea.
