Keith Haring-research project

For studio, Judie assigned us a political artist that we had to research. We had to create a presentation and then based on our research we had to create a piece of work that was inspired by that artist in some way.

I was assigned Keith Haring.

I learned a lot about how creative and how active he was in the art world in the 1980’s New York. Keith Haring went to school at SVA then he dropped out because he was learning and doing more outside of school than in school.

When He was diagnosed with aids, he became a big activist for the LGBTQ+ Community. He created lots of murals all over the world in his last two year to spread awareness. His work was admired by so many because of the simple but powerful messages, which he was able to create with his signature line work.

Because Keith was so passionate about making work that was accessible I decided to paint a denim jacket.

I was inspired by the amount of hearts that he used in his work, which he used to spread the message of love. I added symbols that I noticed that I used a lot in my own work and mixed it in with Haring’s line work.

this is the sketch I decided on.

I used acrylic paint and Mod Podge to seal in the paint afterwards.

This is how the Denim jacket turned out.

Space/Materiality -Final

Our final project for this class was really fun. As a class we were creating an exquisite corpse. Max put us into group and had us pick the body part we would be making. I got the left abdomen. Max told us we  could make our body part look any way we wanted. He also said we could use any materials, as long as our piece was 24″ x 16″.

Since I got a part of the body that was pretty big, I decided to make butterfly wings.

These are the sketches I did to plan my piece out.

I thought about having the wings move, i thought about what i was going to make it out of, how i was going to connect it to the pieces around me.

After talking to Max about my ideas, he suggested making it out of vacuum formed plastic (since he taught us how to use the machine for one of our previous projects).

To vacuum form you need to make a mold that will hold its form as the plastic is being heat pressed against it with force.

He said that wood would be the best option for making the mold. I didn’t want to work with wood for this project because I had just cut through my finger nail during the last project. I was still scared to go back to using the machines. I decide to use cardboard. Max said I need to layer it enough to make sure it wouldn’t lose its shape during the process. these are the cardboard cut out I made. I layered about 7 to 9 piece of cardboard and glued them together with hot glue. I kept the cut outs that fit inside these pieces because I was going to vacuum form them as well.

I don’t have pictures from the vacuum forming process sadly. After I vacuum formed all the pieces I had to cut out them out and fit them together. Then I super glued them together and painted the insides.

This is what the inside of the butterfly wings looked like.

I had to drill holes on the top and bottom of both pieces to be able to add hardware to connect them to all the pieces.

These are the four pieces that created the butterfly wing.

The butterfly wing put together.

This is what the class exquisite corpse looked like. Everyone went in very different directions but we all had a lot of fun.

Drawing final: Expansion into space

I was really excited for this project, our prompt was to think about what would happen in the future, if we had to expand into space. This made me think about how NASA had been trying to grow plants in space. I knew i was going to do something with plants.

I also thought of Avatar, the 2009 sci-fi film. I was inspired by the glowing plants, maybe we will have glowing plants soon because of all the toxins and chemicals we have created.

This made me decide to create my own plant.

These are two images from the movie and two mood boards that I created that inspired my plant.

I found images of tropical plants and a natural geographic article I had seen, of glowing plants.

I knew that I wanted get a glass dome to emulate a scientific lab experiment. I also knew that I wanted to use some left over pvc vinyl, and I wanted my plant to glow.

I then drew out two variations of the plant i wanted to create.

I decided on the first one.

I used  clear pvc vinyl to create the petals and the leaves.

For the leaves I first painted them white. Then I added watered down pink paint on the opposite side of the white paint. This kind of looked like the spots on the orchids.  Then I poked holes into the leaves and added wire to be able to place them into the foam.

After I had cut out these leaves, I cut out green foam (what florist use for displays) to fit the glass dome. I then placed  the leaves around in a circle. After that I started to place some moss all around the sides and under the leaves I had made to cover up the foam and give the plant more greenery. I used three different types of mosses, a red, and two different kinds of green moss. This helped give it lots of texture.

I also created the stem out of wire, I used jewelry pilers to twist two pieces and then added branches by added smaller pieces and leaving the ends un twisted so that i could twist them with the main stem.

Once I had all of this done, I drew out a template for how I wanted the flower shape to be. Once I was happy with them I cut out the pieces in vinyl. After making the leaves I had realized that it was easier to get the effect I wanted by only using one layer instead of ironing two pieces together. This time i didn’t paint the back of the vinyl and only painted the front. I also had some left over nylon string. I used that to sew the pieces together, this also allowed me to leave some string loose to be able to use it as anthers and filaments. I added the ends with hot glue.

I decided to have a very simple design for the flowers since the leaves were more bold. I paints stripes of fluorescent blue on the top three and then painted the bottom two in a lighter blue ( I mixed some white into the blue hoping it would still glow under uv light. and it did.)Then I added some watered down yellow fluorescent to the leaves  and the anthers.

I also decided to create a flower bud and cut out three vinyl pieces and then sewed the sides together. I added three hot glue dots on all three sides. Once it was dry I painted the tips with yellow and pink. Then I added blue paint in the middle to make sure it would glow. I then attached all of the flowers to the wire stem.

It was really fun to see how everyone reacted to seeing my plant glow for the first time. I bought a pack of mini uv lights for the class to be able to shine on the plant when i was presenting.

I also made a poster with an image of my plant. I was not as happy with this part of my project. I wasn’t able to spend as much time on this as i would’ve liked. I made up the name from the scientific plants names of some of the plants that inspired this project.

If I had done this again I would’ve worked more on get the glow on the plants better, and adding the color on the pedals. I also would’ve liked to add the other plant that I sketched out. Originally I had planned to make a botanical drawing.

I traced my drawing on illustrator.

I then I went back in added color and made somethings transparent.

Then I brought everything in to Photoshop. I found a picture of a texture that was similar to the one that i had made with the paint.

I had to change the color with a color adjustment.

Once I had the right color I used clipping masks so that the leaves would be covered in this texture.

I choose a black background to try to make the colors pop out more, but it didn’t really help i couldn’t figure out how to get the right glow.

for the flowers I drew in the blue lines and used  the brush tool to get the texture on the rest of the flower.

And that how everything came together.

Rebuilding Systems + Networks

This project was meant to help us learn to use perspective in our art.

I was really excited to recreate a space and to make a mood board. When I made my mood board I sketched my Ideal room, helping I would find a space similar to it.

I was inspired by the color of Frida Kahlo’s home. I also knew I wanted to incorporate plants, as well as a statue similar to the one in the the image I found.

Sadly the I did not find a room that looked like this, instead I drew a hallway in the University

Center.

Drawing this analog was very hard for me because I couldn’t mark my vanishing points (since they were off the paper). I did learn a lot from this process, and wish I could redo this part of the project.

Once I had this drawing I scanned it to be able to bring it into photoshop and start rebuilding my room. After I meet with my professor to talk about my ideas, she taught me how to reconstruct a room that fit my idea better. She said that i could do this by using the points from my drawing and changing the eye line.

This point helped me find my vanishing points. The green lines would later become my floor

Then I was able to pull the lines from my drawing and find the ceiling.

Then I cleaned up the lines and ended up with this outline. Later I could go back and use the Lasso tool to fill in the wall with the color I wants.

Then I found a sculpture by Yves Klein I liked and bought it into illustrator.

I placed it on top of a screen shot of my outline help me find the size I wanted. I did the same with some pictures of different plants

I went back into illustrator and filled in the walls and outlined the checkered floor.

I started to copy and paste the what I had drawn out in Illustrator and arranging them where I thought fit.

I also added a painting and a window to create more of a balance, as well as create a light source.

From here I added a lighting to determine where the shadow would hit.

Final Piece

Dreamtime

For this project I got inspiration from a piece I did last year. I liked the colors and the plants and wanted to rework them.

Inspiration

These are sketches I did to help me plan out what I wanted to  do for my dreamtime. I knew i wanted plants and clouds.

Step 1: I had the stencils that I used for the drawing I had done last year and I scanned them. I then brought the scan into illustrator to draw them out.Once I had them drawn out I layered them on top of each other to be able to create a pattern.

Step 2:

I had also drawn out some clouds using circles and I copy pasted them from illustrator to photoshop.

Once I had the clouds placed I copy +pasted the leafs  but spaced them out.

After put the leafs in I filled in the bottom half with more leaves. Creating a pattern with the layered leaves.

Step 3: Then I brought in one of sketches into illustrator.

I chose purples for the skin and hair tone to incorporate the colors I had used in my drawing.I then copy+pasted my this into photoshop and fit into the leaves.

I liked how it was looking but it needed something to bring it together. I decided to copy the eye from the figure I had drawn in illustrator and add them to the clouds. I also decides to make swatches of the colors I used.
