Site: Grand Central Terminal

Ideas:

  1. Make a garment that shows the mystery of the Grand Central Terminal.
  2. Make a series of earring collection to express the culture and history of GCT.
  3. Make a fashion collage about the history of passengers’ clothing.
  4. Make a collection of accessories using similar elements as the subway tracks.
  5. Make a blouse inspired by the design of platform of GCT.
  6. Make a pair of shoes with the patterns of the ceiling of the GCT.
  7. Make a long scarf with the images of the art in GCT.
  8. Make a necklace that express the culture and history of GCT.
  9. Make a pair of pants inspired by the architectural design of GCT.
  10. Make a handbag inspired by the architectural design of GCT.

This is my prototype one, I drew my inspiration from the elements of the locomotives. I played with metal pieces and designed with geometry and shapes. For my “oblique strategy”, my task was to revise the most embarrassing part of the project. When I look closely, some part of the connections was poorly done, and the wire was showing and I have to consider that for my final work. Therefore, I rearranged the metal pieces so they connect smoothly.

Hidden and Shown

Grand Central Terminal is not only what we observe, it is using the invisible and intangible sources of power to make the tangible results such as moving all these heavy trains, which makes one of the opposites of hidden and shown. In this set, I was inspired by this philosophy as Wilgus was engineering for Grand Central Terminal. I wanted to add a function to the design, so I made a box that could hold one earring inside. box

The tracks:

The platform of Grand Central Terminal covers 48acres and includes 44 platforms. It is placed below underground, serve 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 below lower. Building tracks is not an easy plan, a vast exhumation for the two new levels of tracks had to be carried on while not disrupting the daily arrivals and departures of hundred of trains. In this set’s design, I played with metal pieces. Because the material is very similar to the material used in tracks which is iron to steel. I combined different small sets of metal pieces together to form a more complex design to pay respect to William Wilgus’ effort in his design of platforms. Also, the sounds that the loose metal pieces produce refer to the sounds that the train tracks make.

Rest and Motion:

To avoid tying up valuable track space by having to switch locomotives from the head of a newly arrived train, the railroads devised an efficient solution called the “flying switch.” This procedure was used without mishap for decades. It is a tribute to the opposites of freedom and order working beautifully together, because the rigid and orderly rules governing this method made for the freedom of trains moving swiftly, reliably, and safely. This set of earring was drew inspiration from “flying switch”, although some might only see it as a procedure but it reminds me of acceleration, speed, rest and motion, which are the principal opposites in all modes of transportation.

This collection of earrings used metal pieces which represents the materials used in the architectures. All three sets are uneven and have two different pieces because to me, in Grand Central Terminal, tens of thousands of spirits interact each day, the tangible and intangible.  It is a place that combines the simplicity with intricacy, the truth and some imagination, and rest and motion, which are all the opposites, just as the totally different shapes in the sets.  And,  I used resin adding white water color, because I want to use white to represent the oneness. Although it is a place constructed full of opposites, detailed organizations, numerous and various features all consolidated to devote for one thing.
