Reading Response Tarlo Hijab

“The hijabshop.com is not just about the promotion of hijab as fashion but also the promotion of hijab through fashion” (P.9)

“Like advertisements, the Hijab Shop’s ones promise an improved lifestyle through consumer products – In this case a lifestyle that is fashionably Islamic, obtainable through the consumption of products whose Muslim credentials are visibly explicit – headscarves marketed as ‘hijabs’”. (P.9)

The hibjabshop is not like the most of the fashion industry, the reason Wahid created this company is to be involved in the islamic community reviving old traditions in a way that is appealing to younger generations. Wahid wanted to find a way to be religiously involved in his community and as a designer he created this new brand that would help in a non direct way the religion.

As years pass by, it must be harder and harder to preserve the tradition of the hijab as the newer generations are now much more socially pressured to follow new fashion trends due to social media. As the hijab was something not a lot of people has been paying attention to fashion-wise, the popularity has been coming down and more people has stopped using them.

Wahid focused on giving the young Muslim more options to be on trend in an attractive and affordable way providing different fabrics, colors and sizes so the Islamic would continue with their ideals of covering up with no “shame”.

I think the idea is great as it was something people where not paying attention to (smaller groups) this business was not only to make profit but to raise popularity in religious ideals. I can relate this reading to the class as we are trying to find a problem in our daily basis (our neighborhood) and this business’ process started when he located the problem within his culture and found the solution to it by researching how many people where struggling with this same problem and how he would be able to fix it by creating different types of hijab.
