Bag Transformation. Space and Materiality

I had to change my design because of lack of fabric. Instead of a cardigan it ended up as a cape.

1. FORM and FUNCTION:

HOW YOUR BAG WILL CONVERT/TRANSFORM – your bag must transform and be convertible

does your bag turn inside out? Yes, Its turns into a new bag

is it wearable? show how… Yes, it is a backpack

what does the zipper do? The zipper opens the bag and makes it possible for it to turn into the new bag by making it inside out.

does it convert from very small to very big (form extension?)does it turn upside down into a seat or become furniture? It opens an additional cape.

does it go from flat to 3-D? No, it is already 3D

what is its form as a bag? Backpack

what is the form when it converts? Backpack with a cape or a new bag

how are the two forms distinct or different? It turns into having two functions once you convert it

how are they related? They are connected to each other by sewing

2. CONCEPT: SPACE and ENVIRONMENT:

Your project must address SOCIAL and /or ECOLOGICAL SPACE (this is up to your interpretation – but think of it in relation to your actual experiences – such as classroom, subway, urban environment, reusable repurposed material, etc.):

identify the social space your project engages with: The bag is wearable for everyday life, for school, for casual daily events.

how do you define “social space”? Interaction with the public

identify the ecological space your project engages with? It adapts to the weather as it transforms into a cape

how do you define “ecological space”? Interacts with the environment

3. ITERATION and PROCESS

Your project must link in some way to one of your last two projects – EITHER the KITE or the SHOE or both. It can be very subtle. Aim to apply skills you have gained from making these two previous projects.

How does this project link or connect to your previous projects?I have always tried to keep my projects in the same palette of colors which is metal color and black, Also my designs are tried to be kept as simple as possible. In this bag I tried to use a lot of symmetric geometric shapes that link to my kite as it is rectangles.

Identify your materials: Buttons, Zippers, Fabric and thread

How did you choose your materials? I had my original design planned out and as I was going along I would have to either choose new materials or change the ones I was already thinking about depending on the needs of my design.

Identify your connections: I did buttons and thread

How did you choose your connections? Everything was chosen in order to make the design more practical and simple for the user.

What were skills or materials you used for this project which were adapted from your previous experience? Most of this project was about sewing which I learned a lot in the previous kite project and it helped me improve my sewing skills.

Name new skills, materials, forms, or approaches you took with this project: Attaching zippers, creating a usable bag, better sewing.

What were the most helpful things you learned during class? Sewing

How did the kids’ workshops help you with this project? What did you learn from the workshops that you didn’t learn in the classroom – or that reinforced the classroom learning?  In the workshop I learned how do to things faster if you work together as a system. During the kite festival, a group of classmates and I had to finish constructing a large number of kites in a short amount of time. We had to create a system were everyone was in a section working and specializing in only one thing which helped a lot in the time used to finish the kites.
