Mask Concept

While researching masks related to my cultural background, i was inspired specifically by the european Mardi Gras masks. The masks emerged as a creation intended to exaggerate the internal feelings of the wearer.

I liked the idea of the mask acting as an expose of the person to whom it belongs. I began to incorporate symbols into my mask design as a means of visually exposing my inner characteristics. Then, while looking through more masks of the european mardi gras culture, I was really attracted to the idea of the use of both the sad and happy emotion as a symbol for their masks. I began to experiment with ways to incorporate both the sad and happy characteristics into one mask, as I feel this further exposes other parts and messages that a mask should convey. My more finalized designs incorporate both happy and sad emotions along with little details as symbolism, forming a more wholesome figurative display of the inner traits being exposed.
