Mario Montez Artist Statement

I tend to create things by working on top of it — even if it is not perfectly drafted or processed in the beginning. I also enjoy making graphical design, which made this project enjoyable as for this project, I imagined and created a script of Mario Montez’s first film: Flaming Creature. Water colour was applied on the printed script to make it look old, then I tried to work on top of it by adding different textures and patters with colour pencils and pen.

In integrative studio, I had to create something that Mario Montez left behind, which was later found and somehow ended up in my possession. The script that I ‘found’ can be seen as a representation of Mario’s life at one stage — when he first became a drag queen. Mario Montez was a very religious man and felt conflicted by his choice of being a drag queen, but gave himself the excuse that if God really hates him, he would have strike him dead. I wanted to portray this religious yet ambitious side of him, and thus included the “You’re OK” phrase at the bottom right of the script written in a different handwriting than his notes.
