Reading response for The Radicalization of Utopian Dreams

As a Design and Technology student, the idea of technology intertwining with many other fields in the future has always been in my mind. In The Radicalization of Utopian Dreams, many of the concerns on how technology are deindividualising human are addressed, but the story doesn’t end there, the talk focused on both the starting point and the end result, despite them not having an intercepting point, and despite the fact that a starting point doesn’t justify it’s result.

I tend to focus on what goods can we as designers make, and move on to creating a project, but never really thought about the opposite end – how would people exploit it and turn it’s intention bad? Deep down we all know what is right and wrong, but a lot of the times we get blinded by the opportunities and greed, even if we don’t, other people are sure to do so.

Despite the fact that changes brought upon may not end up as its starting point, it is a change all together, which means things are bound to prosper and collapse. So in my opinion, this may not be a good thing, but it most definitely isn’t a bad one either. There are always many unexpected that one would encounter in the time they’re alive, and if we’re willing to take the ride and follow the flow, then perhaps we too can create change.

I often think about how a lot of jobs are replaced by machines, and how much of a pity that is, to not be able to fully appreciate artisans that handcraft products. Yet not having machines to create mass productions is a large barrier that would stop the world from evolving in a greater scale. Perhaps there would be a way in the future to preserve the best of both sides, but in order to reach that we must continue to evolve and innovate, and change.
