A visit to Chelsea

Steven Kasher Gallery

During my trip to visit the museums in Chelsea, Steven Kasher Gallery was the one that caught my attention the most. The photographer, Leo Rubinfien, took photos of people and places in black and white. At first it may just be some ordinary photos of the daily lives of people, but by spending more time looking at them, you may discover something new. “The City Beside You, The City Inside You” was the theme of Rubinfien’s photographic series. In his work you can discover the parts of the city that you may have missed, or was too insignificant for you to care. The exhibition makes you think a lot about the people around you, the things that are happening around you, and the city around you.

This is a photograph that I particularly like. Its a photograph of an uneven corner of the streets. There are puddles of water on the cracked parts, creating a flat reflecting surface. Most part of the reflection is really clear, giving off a calm and tranquillising feeling. The reflection also made the contrast on the photo even greater as the deep dark road surrounds the bright clear sky on the reflection. The composition of the photo is another part that attracts me. Part of everything is shown, but not the entire object. There is a bit of everything in the photograph, making it look lively yet not too crowded. There is fluidity, there is stillness; sturdiness and softness… the work is rich in texture that complements one another.

Perhaps its the fact that I like reflections and water a lot, but this photographic work of Rubinfien does truly draw me into it a lot. It is the more peaceful side of the busy city we live in.
