Project 2: Alteration – Feedback LP Reflection

I learned a lot of this project2

One swatch must be embroidered or appliquéd.
One swatch must be printed, pattern dyed, or felted.
One swatch must be 3-Dimensional
throw those three different swatches that I learn a couple of different ways to make the texture. Also, those lectures that help me understand the different cultures and what people always do when they think about that processing.

I made that three swatch to show lots of different ways to do the relationship between clay tile include it‘s color, shape, structure and even texture. First, at all, I have to research those things the most important part. and make those happen in my way, for example using the technique to show the same structure at the swatch, maybe show the texture or even the colors of the swatch. the material is also a super important part because the clay tile is made by clay, so I also put clay and clay‘s color into the mood board to see the color and material relationship to others which is really important to see. Also, I tried two experiences using the painting. the sketchbook page is really significant part also, because all of my ideas happen on the paper and to make it happen at swatches. The whole process is really fun, I try lots of skill that I never use before and never like before. The material is also a challenge for me to do, because I am the kind of person that loves to use wood that kind of material. All of the color choices are about natural color it‘s really beautiful and simple enough to show the characteristic of the clay tile. at project 1 I also follow those important elements to do the project that I will have a strong relationship between those elements. Shapes, patterns, structures, colors, materials and even more.

egypt (object of the week

Until today, the mummies and their coffins are still the most influential artifacts. There is a special mummy in the Egyptian hall of the British Museum in the UK. This is a wooden mummy, from the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. Also collected in the British Museum. About 240 BC, the mummies should be considered one of the most influential artifacts in Egypt. The owner of this raft is the high priest of Honifitif, a distinguished Egyptian. An inscription is written on the coffin. (Sorry for the picture of the coffin with the inscription) This artifact is also the first artifact introduced in the A Brief History of the British Museum. Through a mummy, we interpret a lot of information: how the mummy was made, how Hojinitiv’s life, how he died… Through such a mummy, archaeologists and historians have written more together. A detailed history of Egypt. Just the British Museum has a myriad of mummies, so take this statue as an example. There are many other famous mummies. There is a small piece about the Mummies collection in the British Museum: After the sinking of the Titanic, there was a rumor in the UK that a mummy in the British Museum was lost. The mummies finally got on the Titanic and the ship sank. As soon as the rumors came out, the people in London who were hiding in the mummies were afraid. So the British Museum announced that they were willing to accept the private donation of the collection of mummies to the museum, and even symbolically give a reward, so that the British Museum has a lot of mummies, and it has become the world’s largest collection of mummies. The venue even surpassed the Cairo Museum in Egypt.

Under the CT scan, people can find that he was in the middle ages when he died.

His mummy production method was the most advanced at that time. His internal organs were taken out and carefully wrapped and returned to the body.

project1:skin- feedback LP reflection

I learned how to do swatch by using needles, I also learned how to analysis the color, and also how to find strong relationship between the research to the final product.

I enjoying the class that I learned so much more skills that help me develop and challenges myself. We help each other in the class and learn from each other by pin up and so more.

I find lots of challenge that to do the things that I never done before in this class. And also teacher encouraged student to challenge ourselves by doing the technique that we never done before.

I will do more experience, add more material and also learn more pro stitches to help me to reach my idea as best as I can. I love almost all of their work because they all have different thought at their projects, big scales, color diversity,

so on

Semester long journal

My favorite architecture is my grandmother’s kitchen, which is a kitchen that is a single building. it has big scales like big fireplace, big table, large scale chair. High roof, the old bean is holding the whole building. I remember the air smells nasty. By the way, that kitchen is an individual house that sperate to where my grandparent lives. There is no electricity in that house. Cook by fire, light my candle, but it has a great memory in my old childhood. Especially during the spring festival, this building is able to contain 20 more peoples in this place. It’s a kitchen and a dining place combined together. The dog always can finish the dishes we can not finish. The old glass window is aged and dirty, sunlight gets in the building through those couple glass window becoming unique light in my memory, every furniture is aged and old, but good quality made by my grandfather. This is the architecture and interior make me into this area of study. I think a nice space design is not just the design but also another most important half is the people who live in this space. No matter how good this space is, if the people who live there do not understand or use the space nicely, this space is just like a dead body do not have a soul. That space has my best memory in there, the reason it has all the large scale is this building is design to contain lots of people for the festival. kid and dog have enough space to run and play, elders has a big space to have a nice meal with lots of families or friends.

week3:

William Morris is a great artist, he always keeps his own thought about the craftsmanship and the beauty of the art. I think now on, there are lots of people who start to buy artwork made by industry, because of the cheap price and the

good quality. However I still think handcraft made the best expensive value work in the world because it is unique, every piece of artwork is unique because of man-made. Another hand I think there is no wrong with industry

produce artwork because it a more efficient but the most important thing that keeps the craftmanship is paid a lot more attention to the design part. That is a great advantage of technology develops, there is no wrong with man-made

art but follow the century develop we need to fit ourselves into this best place.  Finally, at Morris’s insistence, the company’s partners left the company, the company changed its name to Morris and continued to produce and sell the

various handicraft designs that Morris insisted on. Morris is a great example if the world can not do what he wants, then he does it by himself to keep the last bottom line of craft art. I am so touched by his decision for his whole life.

Put myself on his shoe, I do not know how much courage I would have to do things like him.

week4:

With the word neoclassicism, Gaudi is one of the most successful architects has combined the style of old and new and created something that was unique and stunning back in the nineteenth century in Spain.

Catalonia, which is located in the northeastern part of Spain used architecture as a tool of expression to convey their emotions towards the oppressive central government. Within the same country, Madrid and Barcelona still obtained the Gothic style as it was reinforced by political connotations of a constant campaign for Catalan autonomy.

Casa Milà has a rough shape of a figure 8-two asymmetrical sections ranged round two small, shaft-like, concrete-floored courtyards. Casa Milà was built from 1905 to 1910, the facade which is Spanish, of the Casa Mila is described as wave breaking; the entire structure has been called an immense sculpture. However, the citizens of Barcelona would rather call it the house of stones. It is built of sandstone, concrete, and majolica with ironwork draped on its bulging balconies.

Week5:

For futurism, we have a really good thing good storage of traditional stuff from history. 4000 years of history gives us a lot. I agree that we can progress with the future and keep looking forward but I think that keeps looking back what people have done with their wisdom and learn from them. I think we need to keep respect with the ancient and traditional stuff. They said they think we just need to forget past and keep going forward. Technology is developing and we are going so fast, one way we can go fast but another way we also need to think back. Respect for the things people done, and also keep experiencing a new world and new ideas.

Even generation is getting better and better. However the 4000 years of history is really important. Once we lose some of the knowledges we can not go back and doing our civilization again. Every piece of today can not live without what human has done 4000years ago.

week6:

why people do not accept urban at that time?

what is the effect of Doxiadis design?

does America’s freedom affect the design style?

what is organic architecture?

what is the real morden?

should the city build by plan or not?

Are the country and city equal?

what can the railroad make the country decided?

Week7

What is human scale? Human function? Those are two really important question. I love those articles and the point those text made is such a right idea I think. First at all, Human scale is a important thing to think about when we doing design because this world is made by human most part. We should think about human scale all the time when we design stuff and especially stuff that have relationship with human body. For example, product design, furniture design and interior design. There are a lot more things to think about so we need serious face those function and scale. Type is also a really important words that because different types of thing need different type-need which is different type of design. Different types of furniture requires different human scale and different function. Table has unique function makes the scale being different. Those couple words have strong relationship to each other. Also the third story tell us that everything is actually serve for human. So do not mass up the relationship. Some designer think that other people should follow the product or art he design. Never forget that product is always serve for human, otherwise there is no meaning to create or produce the art. As a design should be really clearly understand this relationship

What’s the relationship between human scale and human function?

How to define decoration art?

How can we understand crime at different way?

Ornament make people different?

Is designer’s idea more important than customer?

What’s the own definition of decoration art?

Week8

The Johnson is a amazing architecture at that time. He graduated from Harvard, and also he love to visit French German and those countries, He also went to Greece to visit all the different architectures. He quiet his school lots of times because of those trips in those country. After he come back to us, He love to bring back the modern design style as international style. Using glass, lights to make the architecture better experience for human body. He learned a lot culture in ancient Europe cultures to apply in to the modern architecture or interior space. There are lots of examples like that. Some time we can see some of those inspiration from a art piece like sculpture or painting. Same parterns, same scales, same light, same structure and so on. His favorite thing is knowing how to communicate with old culture and apply to the new world. He is never limited himself to develop his idea all the time. Play with shadow and light is his favourite way, also using some recycle material. Personally I also really love to transfer the traditional culture or architecture to the new architecture or new material interior but have really strong relationship with the traditional idea or traditional form. That leads to a better upgrade design compare to the traditional one.

1.how to define the international style?

2.what is the best way to design the modern style?

3.Why Philip Johnson does want the friend to do that?

4.what are most important element of architecture by Philip Johnson ?

Week 9:

This week’s reading talked a lot about the house research, to analysis one house by couple particulars way to the scale, material, light, pattern and even human relation about it. It is really related to the details of every corner in this house and what’s the function and meaning about it. Some paragraphs is focusing the corner and analysis it in lots of different ways like the ceiling pattern, color and material. “His ceilings were plastered, walls were usually a dark hardwood plywood” those kind of description are everywhere in the article. Lots of data support, the scale, the weight and so on everything can help the me understand the house better and the greatness of the house. Something that I never expected is at the first article, it helps put all the environment element in to the whole architecture. The enviroment actually affects a lot to the building itself. Couple of the drawing that perfectly showing how does this architecture communicate with the environment. The trees or the shadow of the trees or how the light becoming totally different stuff through this particular environment affect. Different angles of shot helps me totally understand the truth about this space. For example, the outside corner at the mountain that how the trees hit the surface of the building. The little shadow picture in the the west wall. Shots that under the living room stairs. All those angles of shot make this case study. All of those three documents that introduce the kind of contemporary style of the building and interior,

Why should we include the space outside of the building?

How could environment affect interior?

What are the element about that affect?

Are those case all modern style?

Why all those design are in the end the 19 century and the beginning of 20 century?

What is the difference between future style and modern style?

week10

The lecture of the waterfalls is a great architecture which is the one we have in today’s lecture class. It is one of the really famouse international style at the post war United States. Clear and strong geometry shape used in this architecture which created the significance part of the international style and modern architecture. Luckily I have been there couple years ago with my high school class trip. It’s a wonderful place and space when you arrive there. Totally unforgettable experience when you put your body inside of that architecture, combined interior and architecture. Lights. Colors, patterns, temperature are all really amazing at that environment. There are a great waterfall under that house. You can clearly hear the sounds of the water flowing and falling, that sounds can almost make you fall into the sleep, combined human made architecture with nature craft together to reaching the top design of this house. What is amazed me is also about the style and functionality of this design, there are some windows at that house are designed for living guests have unforgettable experience, for example there is a low window on the stairs, the purpose of that is to make people can see what’s going on about the room they are going to. also there is a car entrances and a human entrance both on the back of the architecture to make people cannot see the entrances which I think it’s a such a smart idea. The environment is full of trees, as the season changing this house’s experience is also changing as well. Winter is peace, warm, beautiful. Summer is cool, water, energetic. That the power of the design and also the power of the nature. All of those design idea make this one of the most famous architecture in USA.

week 11

The focus of this week is the funk architecture by Bill Voyd the shape of it is amazing, first at all it is a unusual architecture at that area or even that period of time. The triangle is the most stable shape in the world, the designer using lots of triangle to make the whole surface of the architecture, the colorful material is also showing the relationship between the architecture and environment. Also the material is glass so that make it more interesting. There are lots of big triangle that contain lots of small triangles, and it almost honeycombs shape structure. Also at the night, people at the outside can clear see the light part that is square. Using the structure as format for an asymmetrical design image is a more significant and specialized elaboration. It is not a dome it’s a home. Actually the most important part of this project is about the material and the environment. Plywood, Railroad tie, culled lumber and so on. All the material are so friendly to the environment that are not wasted. I love the way that how simple those architecture is, to make the space more flexible increasing tha the flexibility is really important element to make this project much more functional and reliable.

week 12

Don-Ino Frame 1914 is also a great example for function. People start to using those basic element like rectangle, circle and square. Simplify the building structure to create more space and flexibility for human living. It’s really symbolic structurally design. The best advantage of this kind of architecture is it could be any function as you want. Until now there art still lots of buildings are using this kind of structure. However those design is not just a simple geometric design, it also includes lots of thinking behind it, for example Soho China, all the architecture are significant modern design, but the design inspirations are come from nature, like winds, tress, waters and so on.  geometric form is the most efficient form at the contemporary design, so those couple hundred years contemporary architecture is more likely to geometric style. First at all, it saves time, Second at all it saves material. Walter Gropius’ bauhaus style is one of the great example. Simple but functional is a the main idea of the contemporary architecture style. Compare to the traditional space that now the space lower the ceiling because people are not longer more focus on the the decoration and feeling but lower ceiling to save the space and make more people can include by same amount of space.

4.2 Project 3: PERCEIVED SPACES

Hudson Yards is being planned to be “Tomorrow’s City Today”. “Hudson

Yards represents the 21st century, and Battery Park City represents the end of the

20th century,” said Mitchell L. Moss, a professor of urban policy and planning at

New York University. “They are just totally different.” It will become the cultural

center of Manhattan’s New West Side. A template for the future of cities, this new

neighborhood which has not only changed the impression of New York towards

the world, but also the way of how New York think about the world. It has a

special and good location, makes it will be the best developed cultural, business

and supervise tourism exchange. However, why this area was chosen with such

future proposals.

Hudson Yards is a 28-acre mixed-use development on Manhattan’s far West

Side, bound by 34 th and 30 th street to the north and south, and by Tenth Avenue and

the West Side Highway to the east and west. This area is divided into two parts.

The first phase, Eastern Yard, will be eight new buildings including residential and

commercial skyscrapers, public gardens, a massive shopping mall, and the Shed

cultural center. The Western Yard, on the other hand, will have an additional

residential, office, and retail space, as well as elementary school. After 12 years of

planning and six of construction, Hudson Yards is composted by 2025,

Hudson Yards will be the core of Manhattan’s finical, top elites, shopping

gathering, and residences of New West Side, as well as the template for the future

of cities. The reason why it has the advantages of being the most prosperous area

in the future is about its profound history, wide undeveloped space, and the

convenient location. A landmark cannot be made in one day.

The Hudson Yards is currently being transformed into the Hudson Yards

megaproject has functioned as many things in the city’s 400-year history, this area

before trains ran alongside pedestrian and other traffic, frequently leading to

carnage and the nickname “Death Avenue.” The grade-level tracks were replaced

by the freight-carrying High Line in the 1930s. The interesting design Mayor

George Opdyke cited New Yorkers’ propensity to jaywalk as a reason to keep the

train cars together and persons desirous of crossing a railroad track will wait for

the rapid passage of a train of cars without making an attempt to pass over. It

seems very dangerous, so in 1910 New York Central Railroad empire change the

situation.

basketball film

  Basketball

It was just a normal day in New York City, I was busy on my daily work, with my laptop, suddenly I fell into sleep. It is a Dream: When I was in high school, I play basketball every day in my school with my friend. Back then I love basketball, watch NBA game with my friend every night, Basketball was my everything at high school. All the memories come up to my mind. I feel I should make some change。 So I waked up. Right now I am at college in New York Manhattan. There is too much thing going on in the city. It made me start to forget to lose more and more passion for basketball. My body is getting fat, my health is going down. My life becoming new York life, unhealthy life. Playing a video game, eat snacks and sleep a lot, using lots of computers. Even life is better, the apartment is better but my heart is becoming empty.

I hear my friend knock on my door. He passes me the ball, I decide to find the passion back on the court.

I used a lot of close-ups to express the emotions of the picture, and there are also many long shots to let the audience feel the charm of the scene.  The lens of the basketball, the lens of the running, the lens of the eyes, the lens that touches the high, and the various details that can touch the heart.  Use these details to let the audience feel the emotions I want to express. My love for basketball, my thoughts about the past, and the tiredness of my life are in these pictures.  And I use black and white to distinguish between the present and the past, memories.
