Fashion Advertisement and Gender Portrayal

This is the Prada Pre-fall 2015 advertisement. From the picture, there is a  business-looking women on the right, with her black purse and rather plain and serious, body covered jacket. Her face is displayed  entirely and starring fearlessly at the camera, while using her arms to hold and control the male model next to him. The male model has a 20s Flappers hair style, and even looks rather insecure in her arm, he dressed more homey, putting his weight on the female model. This is a classic ‘strong’ women look in the fashion advertisements, it’s hard to not agree that this is a modern lady in the picture, but is this what every female should be? Decades ago, the society asked women to stay in house while men leave and work, the so called ‘modern women’ is just an other requirement that the society put on women today. In the Fashion and Cultural Studies, it says :”Gender is not only problematic binary opposition or dualism that limits thinking in fashion…modern Western thought is riddled with either/or that has limited what and how we know fashion in the context of a transnational world.” Seems like even till today we are keep on giving just two options, submit or control, to men and women. There will always be more that just two images for our genders, and there should not be given a rule of what women or men should behave, fashion today should not be a promotion of certain lifestyle, we already had our time with Coco Chanel. Fashion is ever-changing,  thus fashion is telling us there is no right answer, keep flowing.
