Reflection

I personally really like this assignment, I can explore more into photography, which is fresh new field for me. In the very beginning, I did not know how to take long-exposure, frozen moment, and continuation. I then did a research a lot, searched abundant imagines, and was brainstorming for a long time. I was going to choose firer, or water, however, I think it would be too hard to shoot, and even might broke the camera. Suddenly, I immediately thought about it would be kind of interesting, and there are always a lot of people over there, as a result, I can take a small motion photo very easily. I

Photo Frame Contrast

The upper image is photographed by Anne Geddes, in August, 2016, and it is under Until Now Gallery now. On the other hand, the lower imagine is created by Dorothea Lange, and it is called Migrant Mother, which done in 1936. These two imagines show a really big contrast, they clearly show the difference between before and today. Nowadays, people are more peaceful and cherish human lives. In contrast, there were a lot of battles, wars and violence, immoral activities in 1930s, which we can see legend Ms. Lange delicately shot this well-known photograph. As we can see, it was consist of three people, who are a mother and two children, without hope and help. Furthermore, she used black to highlight the darkness and depression at that time. The mother in the photo draws me the most attention, we can easily find the sadness on her aged face. Conversely, the photo taken by Ms. Geddes is exactly different from the previous mentioned photo. She meticulously put three lovely new born babies in the pots, and put sunflower decorations on them. She then put them in the very middle of the picture. In addition, she also chose a purple, cloudy background to point out how adorable they are, and it is much lighter and more colorful than the 1930s piece.

Time Map Project

In the very beginning, I was thinking about drinking water or shooting basketball, which is my favorite sport, and so forth. To me, these ideas were not very impressing, and a little bit lack of distinctiveness. Then I started thinking for few days, but not any single interesting idea popped. One day, I was flushing toilet, and I noticed it would definitely be a cool and fresh notion. I started flushing toilet again and again, and recording the movement. It was quite interesting that after only few seconds it became still again. I printed them out and decided to put them on the toilet paper. I wish I could make a hanger or something to hold it, then it would be much better. But,to be honest, I think it was quite successful, and I personally love this project very much.

Step 1

Kara Walker encourages us to look at things that are so visible in our society that we wish more invisible, such as slavery, immigration, migration, and black people.

Step 2

Sketching

She then used a black sphinx as a main model to represent the stereotype of black women,  and sketched it.

Step 3

Building small models from different angles to illustrate.

Step 4

Cooperating with workers to fill sugar into the models, since she once said she likes “its temporality, that it’s here and then it’s gone.” Ms. Walker wanted this project to be temporary.

After putting different pieces into a large sculpture, they polished the edges, to make it much smoother.

Finally, they used white paint to color it, which she did it in purpose. She not only wanted to let it become more animated, but also made it contrast to the black women.

Step 5

Finalizing

Showing and explaining the concept behind this sculpture to the audience, which located in in Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

In my previous ESL class, the professor asked us to choose the topic about argument/persuasion essay for the final project during the weekend. At first, I honestly had no idea what should I choose, since we cannot choose a very broad topic or anything that is really popular, such as should gay marriage allowed or not, should marijuana be legalized, and so on. As a result, it was quite difficult to select a suitable and interesting topic, I was totally stuck. Nevertheless, I still had to confront it, and then started brainstorming for a really long time. All of a sudden, I recalled one of the articles that I have read before. It was a pretty debatable and infamous topic few months ago– “Is Zara copying others’ works?”. I chose my side without any hesitation, which is I strongly think Zara is copying other artists and designers’ works. I directly wrote down my topic sentence, “Zara definitely plagiarized others’ designs and turn them into their own items.” Since I have seen a lot of stuffs from Zara that are so similar to others, and I do not think the brand’s behavior is tolerable. I immediately turned on my laptop and started googling, and I found out that there are so many illustrations to support my position. For example, Zara not only took countless less-known artists’ motifs, but also other renowned fashion brands’ design. While I was researching, I was so mad at what Zara has done. However, it still could not dampen my enthusiasm, I was so excited that I could not wait to start my first draft. Just in several hours, I done my research paper, and I was quite satisfied about the outcome. After few days, I looked back to proofread, I then found out that it was literally a mass. The paper was full of grammar errors, wrong spelling  and a lot of silly mistakes. Under all of sorts of reluctance, I decided to face and correct it. After struggling for a while, I submitted on canvas with my confidence. Nonetheless, the professor said I should add more about my personal stance rather than put these many citation and information in it. To be honest, I was quite shocked, since this method of writing is totally different from my high school’s style. I then unwillingly deleted a lot of details with . I still clearly remembered that was a really hard time for me, I thought the more details I wrote, the higher score I will get. And yet, it was totally in contrast to what I thought. Finally, I omitted those not unnecessary parts and added my own ideas instead, and  submitted the final draft with anxiety. But it seemed like the hard work paid off, I received an A on this assignment. When I received my transcript, I still could not forget how joyful and proudful I was.

Whitney Museum

When I was lounging around to look for pieces that catch my attention, this image immediately appealed me. It is a pretty well-known photo, which not only me, but also I bet every single person in the world has seen it. I was so shocked and surprised, since I would not think this iconic photograph would  be shown at the museum. First of all, it is located in a spacious, dark room. The projector projected this acclaimed graph, which consists of two monotone colors–black and white, to shows this significant event took place in July 1946. It illustrates an explosion on the ocean, Bikini atoll in the Marshall Islands. Mr. Bruce Conner shot this scary scene when the atomic bomb suddenly unleashed, and there are 23 photos in total from various angles, heights and speeds. People can easily recognize that it is a bomb explosion. Nevertheless, to me, it looks like a broccoli from different perspective. This project definitely uses sequence and it is linear, and the speed is not fast but not slow. It just repeats again and again. Mr. Conner skillfully put the explosion in the very middle of the screen. This project is totally astonishing and outstanding. Later, I went to 7th floor to find a portrait that interests me. When the elevator open, I immediately spit a huge, silver painting, which is done by renowned artist–Andy Warhol. It basically describes heroes from different stories, such as Superman, Wicked Witch and so forth. More importantly, the silver paint represents the “silver screen”. Mr. Warhol wanted to express the unreal and falseness of the truth. The experience of these two floors were totally opposite. The lower floor was a little bit more noisy, and fill of different sorts of sound. In contrast, the upper floor was really quiet, not a lot of people were talking, they are just enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. However, both of their exhibition are impressive. I really love Whitney museum.
