Creative Technical Studio 1

Our first project was a skirt with one side of grain line, and the other side with cross grain. This project clearly showed how use of grain line and a cross grain can effect the look of the skirt (garment). The side with grain line dropped as the gravity pulls, nicely flow and how normal garment is used. On the other hand. the side with cross grain tend to have bigger silhouette, which means that it was trying to go to the side, not to the ground as gravity pulls. It was really interesting to see how different the garment looks based on which grain line are used. To create this garment, I had to write one side to be parallel to the selvage, and the other one in perpendicular way from the selvage. Then, I stitched two lines to create the wrinkle in order to make the muslin fit to the waist of my mannequin. Also this is the first time where I learned to put a regular zipper in class. In addition, I have never done the waistband. From how to measure them accordingly to the size of a waist, and how to put it to the garment.

Next thing I did in class is the bodice. At first, I learned how to drape and make a basic fitted bodice. Then, I created few samples for the dart manipulation in half-scale size of the bodice in order to make a quick, and paper saving pattern. Then, I chose one specific pattern that is developed from my logo. I decided to put YC, and Korean letter that is initial for my name.

Then I learned how the basic sleeve looks, and how to put them. The mid-term project was to finish the bodice with the sleeves on and the skirt that I firstly made from this class. As I was putting the sleeves, at first I sewed in perfectly but it was the opposite arm’s sleeve so I had to pull out the whole thing and do it again. Unfortunately, I kept making mistakes so putting the both sleeves on took me few hours.

This is what the final garment looks like.
