Artist statement

Artist statement

For everyone has starkly different personal backgrounds that tell their own unique story. My designs are crafted and shaped by our own unique exposure to the world, where they give an insight to my personal experiences that ultimately depict my own specific lens, expressed with my developed design manifesto and aesthetics. Growing up in Singapore, Korea, Brazil and Chile, I have experienced multifarious cultures which automatically embeds as an omnipresent influence in my artworks.

Through my designs I experiment unorthodox art materials and techniques and challenge myself think and create new intriguing ways to interpret the amalgamation of the past and present, reality and virtuality, and rationality and absurdity. I am excited to create my own reinterpretation of art from different time periods where traditions would be recast and reframed to form the unconventional— a new innovative perspective. I also want to explore the most creative ways in which one could combine technology and art, where the specificity and precision allows the ultimate juxtaposition from the spontaneity offered by our human hands.

A key aspect to my design constitutes of minimal, functional, sustainable and innovative approach that would seek to evolve around technology and various experimentation of media. I believe that technology in our generation is an essential tool to utilize and experiment to create a new and innovative design.

  1. Yunsun,
Overall, this is a nice start to your artist statement. Right now, it feels a little unfocused and you explore a lot of different ideas – which is fine – but you need to try and figure out a way for these ideas to be organized more clearly. There are a couple of grammatical errors within your statement, so go back in and edit your writing to make this stronger. I suggest taking your artist statement to the Learning Center at some point in the semester and have someone comb through it with you – I think this will really help create a strong and focused statement. Your statement leaves me wanting to know a little bit more about you as a designer, and I think if you try and organize your existing statment by honing in on what exactly you are trying to say that you will have a more focused statement. Overall, good work here.
