Feminist Denim Jacket
In the 1960’s hippies were radical people who very openly expressed their opinions in many ways. One of these ways was by making statements on clothing. A very popular theme of the protest clothing was anti-war because of the Vietnam War. They silk-screened t-shirts with anti-war statements and symbols of peace. After seeing all of the different ways these hippies expressed themselves through DIY fashion, it makes me wish that this was more popular today because of the endless directions you could go with this type of protest. As a fashion student, coming into this assignment, I was met with many different ways to approach creating a protest through clothing because there are so many issues today such as feminism, pollution, societal flaws, war, etc.
I chose to re-invent this men’s Levi’s jacket by painting the word “Feminist” on the back in pink font. I feel that today being a feminist is looked at as being someone who thinks women are superior, when it does not. Being a feminist is agreeing that women and men are equal and should be treated and paid equally to men. I thought that using a feminine color and making a feminist statement on a men’s garment was an ironic way to show that being a feminist is not something to be ashamed of or something to hide but rather something to declare and be proud of.
