YSL & Halston: Fashioning the 70’s

Note 3 moments in the timeline for each designer that are interesting to you for possible further research.

  1. November 1973: Yves Saint Laurent and Halston participate in a fashion face-off between Paris and New York at the grandiose Palace of Versailles in France; the event becomes known as the divertissement a Versailles (Battle of Versailles). The Americans are hailed as the unofficial winners with New York Times declaring “French Were Good, Americans Were Great”.
  2. May 1972: Halston launches his ready-to-wear line “Halston Originals” and shoes the first Ultrasuede shirtdresses in its debut collection.
  3. January 1978: Halston moves his headquarters and showroom to the twenty-first floor of the Olympic Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York.
  4. 1958: Saint Laurent shows his first couture collection at Dior dubbed the “trapeze”.
  5. June 1995: Saint Laurent starts working as an assistant at Christian Dior; he is only 19 years old.
  6. May 1954: YSL moves to Paris from Oran, Algeria, and enters a fashion sketch competition; he wins first and third prize and has top design made by Hubert de Givenchy.
