For Thursday we will focus on the suburbs as a way of life before transitioning to the urban inner city next week. For each group, outline the reading- that is, find the thesis and the supporting claims in each article. Try to find the structure of the paper by first locating the thesis and then seeing how they structure the argument. You don’t have to read the paper closely if you can skim each section to see what it is doing to support the thesis. If you can’t quickly find the thesis, read the introduction and conclusion to see if its restated. The reading assignments are as follows:
Group 1: Kirp- Our Town. He gives two examples in the second half (give us those examples) but focus on the first half to see how it structures those two examples.
Group 2: Hannigan- Don’t Go out Tonight. Use the authors section heading demarcations as a way to outline the main argument.
Group 3: Crawford- The World in a Shopping Mall. Same as group 2. Its a longer read, so use the structure of the authors sections to quickly make sense of what each section is doing in supporting the main argument.
