Bridge 2: Taxonomies

My theme is “Environment.” I collected 72 pictures for my taxonomy image collection aiming to explore on my theme. There are 36 signifier photos and 36 photos that are context based and other artists’ artworks. I found most of my artists’ artworks from “Wikiart,” and the others are from “artsy,” “LACMA” and “Google.” And I used InDesign to organize all of them by timing and categories.

The collection of context is the context and other artists’ works and most of my artists’ artworks from “Wikiart,” and the others are from “artsy,” “LACMA.”  I organized them in order with the time they have been created. I want to show the transition of the evolution of artworks by pasting time. The first one who placed at the left upper corner is the newest artwork of artwork I found, and the last one who placed at the right bottom corner is the oldest artwork I found. At the beginning of the research, I realize “environment,” most of them used the media of tree and woods which relates to signifier. The stereotypes of “environment” are green, trees and plants and that’s the reason why most of the artworks I found are based on them. They show my topic clearly, and that’s what I want to show to the audience, I want to make everything obvious and straight forward. This is the purpose and intention of how I made this grid, and I wish I shift my ideas to the audience.

The collection of the signifier is the images which can signifier the theme of “environment.” I organize them in order with categories. As you can see the first row are all the symbols of eco-friendly, earth, environmental decay, and protection. And the second and the first four images of the third row are the image shows the pollution we created. At the middle right-hand side which are the four black and white photos are showing the pictures from America in the industrial century. Many people complain about China produce a lot of pollution, but go back in the time; America has been like that as well, and I want to tell people that polluting happens anywhere and we shouldn’t point at someone and put the blame on them. The first four pictures fo fourth row are the images from China which I characterized the figures as the focus point. At the bottom are the pictures of animals have been poison and murder from the pollution and effects made by the human.

What I learned about my topic through this image collection exercise was the most environment artist like to used wood as the media to shift their thought of their thought and express themselves. And I learned that pollution happens anywhere, but we should learn how to stop producing, reduce pollution, live in green lifestyle, recycle, etc. And what was most challenging about this research was doing the analysis of the context. Apparently, there are not that much of artworks based on environment, and they are too limited on making wooden artworks which trouble me. Finally, this is an informational and useful resource for further researching, and it is an essential part of the research, just building a house, this assignment is like the bricks at the bottom which give me a base and direction of following assignments and this topic.

Experience of Being Interviewed in Class:

We had an interview workshop today (March 11, 2019). We used several questions from the sheet which the professor gave out; They are pretty useful, not interviewing other people but indicate our topic. We are able to see different people working on various topics, and do they explain themselves. It’s interesting to see how does my partners received and shift my point of view to other classmates; they used their words to interpret my ideas which I like it pretty much. But the part I am not delightful is when my partner twist my ideas when they are trying to explain my project. It’s an excellent chance to review myself too. I realize maybe I didn’t give out my thoughts to the audience that clearly, and that’s the thing I need to improve. Finally, I gained from the taxonomy is to declare my direction of my topic, and I learned the basic knowledge on researching of articles, images and artworks.
