For this assignment, we chose a text to modify through erasure of text, creating an art piece and new meaning.
I wanted to create a critique erasure of The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan, a book that I read recently and had mixed feelings on. Using red marker on a black and white page, I wanted to create a bold but simple piece that mimicked the look of academic notetaking with a semi-opaque “highlighter” effect. My text that I left behind focuses on my critiques of the original text as myopic for its “white feminist” approach to women’s issues.
Response: I think that my response in this assignment is a little brief, and could be elaborated on and more elegant. However, I think this serves a good survey of an art piece that explains what it needs to and letting the art speak for itself.
