Sleeve Exploration

Design Statement

For this project, I decided to create a cocktail dress. My main inspiration was the dark green silk crepe fabric that I had at home. The material is very heavy and holds shape pretty well. I was thinking of what kind of sleeve can work well on that fabric when I started my manipulations. Firstly, I created flat draped sleeve, and I enjoyed that technique. Then I tried to achieve the result through patternmaking and manipulations with raglan sleeve. Finally, I decided to combine two methods, and made an open shoulders dress, with extra long sleeves. I also added transparent printed organza on the front to add some color and get rid of the darts. I wanted to show beautiful parts of women’s body without revealing too much. I tried to make the dress feminine and mysterious at the same time and achieved that through the color of the crepe, bare shoulders, and the fullness of the sleeves.

Shoulder Manipulation

This was my favourite outcome, so I decided to work with it further. This was my favourite manipulation. I tried to achieve the effect of open shoulder and got rid of the back shoulder dart. I decided to make the sleeve longer than usual to emphasize the draped part.

Final Pattens

I draped the skirt a little bit and then decided to use Shingo technique on the front bodice. I chose silk crepe and organza as my materials.

Final

I decided to mix these two fabrics for this project because I always wanted to use silk crepe and see how hard it is to work with it. Moreover, I wanted to see how does the transparency of the fabrics work on the bodice, and this silk crepe is just draped very heavy and drapes beautifully in the sleeve.
