Surprising Curation:
Thoughts:
The MoMA blends the trope of the “Male Creative Genius” with up and coming artists, lesser-known artists, and activist work. The curation both compliments and juxtaposes. The first thing you notice when entering the spaces is a conscious curator’s hand, deconstructing and reimagining the entire construct of art. The museum itself takes a stance that directly opposes its previous perspective. I have always enjoyed the MoMA, as I enjoy seeing the original paintings that I study in school. I know however, many people that actively hated the MoMA and refuse to revisit. The reopening of the museum addresses many of the concerns I heard from these people. However, it is still a decidedly Western perspective. There are some specific gallery spaces in the MoMA that address other regions, and overall the Western perspectives addressed in the museum are eclectic and diverse – but if you are after a true worldly perspective on modern art, the MoMA is still intensely lacking. The reopening of the MoMA was a step in the right direction, but the critic in me sees it more as an outstanding business move above all else.
