We got the wonderful opportunity to step outside of the classroom and immerse ourselves in the actual professional art world. Each of the artists on exhibition in the galleries had their own visual voices. I was particularly fond of Paul Stephen Benjamin’s, who explored the word “black” in many contexts beyond that of skin color (http://www.marianneboeskygallery.com/exhibitions/paul-stephen-benjamin). The result was a thematically cohesive exhibition that was at once subtle and extremely powerful. I feel that this style of learning makes me more invested and engaged in what it truly means to be a maker, and seeing the works of others also inspires me to put more effort into my own work.
