About Parallax Animation

Parallax means giving a depth effect to something. Basically, you break your 2D object/image in different layers and move those layers in 3D space. Once the layers are separated, there is a depth or perspective between each layer. Now, you just make them move at different rates and directions. This effect is primarily seen on the websites these days. iPhones have a wallpaper mode called “perspective” which does the same thing.

Inspiration and Examples

Following are some of the work and examples of parallax animation I found online (the ones I liked):

[1]: Diving to catch a ball – Making 2D images come alive

What I learned: the parallax effect is basically creating a perception of 3D using objects in 2D

[2]: Using a parallax scroll to make an interactive UI

Website: http://uxinmotion.net/
What I learned: Parallax effect in AE can be used to visualize a UI. Instead of showing still images, an animation creates an interaction.

[3]: Interactive storytelling using parallax scroll: It appears that the entire screen rotates

Done by Matt Smith: http://www.gun.net.au/
What I learned: Website design can also be done unconventionally – creating a story based on the parallax scroll. The effect when the entire screen rotates makes you feel that you are on that boat.

[4] Website showing the evolution of Porsche: the car model changes with the year
Parallax scroll effect website found through Awwwards
http://porschevolution.com/#undefined
Done by: Ondrej Homola: http://www.ondrejhomola.com/
What I learned: Simple concepts can be used to represent ideas. A great use of parallax scroll. The website is about the experience of a Porsche at different times in history. The experience starts with the ignition turning on and takes the user through the history of different models of Porsche as they scroll.
