Regenerative Cultures- Volunteering

My group project involved the creation of recycled bags. We wanted to target the problem with plastic waste. Each bag is made from scraps and the drawstrings are braided plastic bags. The pouches served as a prize for a game that also targeted the problem of over producing and using plastic. OI wish we could’ve made larger bags so that they could be used for groceries, but it actually turned out well because most of the game players were children. I thought the whole parade would’ve lasted longer, but it was such a beautiful day (I was just glad to be outside). My project was distributed, and we didn’t create any waste from it. I volunteered three times for the parade. I first helped create the puppets for the event. I sewed a shirt onto a cushion and helped paint signs. The people were extremely friendly and seemed very passionate about the event. I learned a lot this year, and about how one can be more sustainable even in a big city like this. I then volunteered twice for the sculpture. I didn’t take pictures of the puppet day, but I captured the finished sculpture. I helped create long earrings out of shells and helped situate the creature on the raft. Over all it was a really fun experience! I learned a lot in this course and I already see changes in how I interact with the world.
