Original Idea:
I was thinking about my obsession with purchasing new pairs of socks. When I was home for winter break, my mom forced me to sort through all of them and decide what I wanted to keep or throw out. Luckily she didn’t get rid of anything. In response to learning about the over production and collecting of clothes, I want to use my socks from my drawers to create a functional bag/basket to hold some of my art supplies. It is a simple design, but I want to learn to create something small from a huge collection of things.
After going home and looking at my socks, I decided to do a knot rug instead. I think this rug will now serve as a bath mat. It will absorb water well, and the color will add a nice pop to a bathroom. The rug is pretty thick, and is foldable. I can easily fit it in my suitcase. It might be a little more fragile than a manufactured rug, but that is due to my poor sewing skills. If I had used a sewing machine instead of hand stitching, the overall piece would be much more durable. Each sock was cut into multiple loops and tied together into a long rope. From there, I coiled the piece into a giant spiral and sewed it together.
It took me way longer than I thought, but I am happy I was able to condense a huge pile into something useable.
